USE CAUTION - KNOW BEFORE YOU GO! The recent ice storm on March 29, 2025 and subsequent wind events have left many downed and damaged trees across the Mio Ranger District of the Huron-Manistee National Forests that have interrupted recreation opportunities on motorized and non-motorized trails. Crews are actively working to clear trees and debris from Forest Service roads and trails. Visitors should expect down trees and other debris on trails and roads – Please slow down and use caution. Access to areas may be limited on the Forest. This may impact the ability of first responders, such as ambulance and fire first responders, to respond to an emergency. Hikers, equestrians and motorized trail users can locate affected trails on our website at or call the Mio Ranger District Office at (989) 826-3252. About

Island Lake Campground is located on the southern edge of the Mio Ranger District in Huron-Manistee National Forest, featuring a 58-acre sheltered glacial lake with a designated swimming beach. The campground offers 17 individual sites with paved parking pads, picnic tables, fire rings, and lantern posts set among mixed hardwood forest. Several sites offer views of the lake and its namesake island through the trees. The lake reaches a maximum depth of 25 feet with cold water temperatures, and is popular for swimming, fishing for sunfish, perch, and bass, and non-motorized boating. A 1.25-mile loop trail departs from the campground and showcases the area's glacial geology, winding through the chaotic arrangement of depressions and ridges of the West Branch Moraine. A spur trail connects to nearby Loon Lake Day Use Area. OHV enthusiasts can access the Mack Lake Motorized Trail System and Bull Gap Hill Climb Area from the nearby M-33 trailhead. The campground is gated in the off-season and operates as a first-come, first-served facility. Wildlife and waterfowl viewing opportunities are abundant in the mixed hardwood forest surrounding the lake.

Directions

From West Branch, travel east on M-55 for 5 miles. Turn left and travel north on M-33 for 16 miles. Turn left and travel west on Loon Lake Loop Road for 1 mile. The campground is on the left.
