Oak Flat Campground is one of three family campgrounds at Richardson Grove State Park, a historic destination established in 1922. The campground operates seasonally from mid-June through mid-September, providing a quieter alternative to the year-round Huckleberry and Madrone campgrounds. Situated among coast redwoods that tower over 300 feet tall, Oak Flat is accessed via a brief unpaved road section off Highway 101. The campground is part of Richardson Grove State Park's 1,800 acres along the South Fork of the Eel River, designated as a National Wild and Scenic River. Each campsite includes standard amenities: fire ring, picnic table, and food lockers for bear safety. Coin-operated hot showers and restrooms serve the camping area. The park enforces an RV length limit of 30 feet and trailer length limit of 24 feet due to the narrow, winding park roads through old-growth forest. Summer visitors enjoy swimming and wading in the Eel River, exploring nine miles of hiking trails including the gentle "racetrack" path through old-growth redwoods, and participating in campfire programs and Junior Ranger activities. The park's visitor center and nature store operate during summer months. Richardson Grove is located seven miles south of Garberville on Highway 101, approximately four hours north of San Francisco.
