About

Oak Flat Campground is one of three family campgrounds at Richardson Grove State Park, located seven miles south of Garberville off Highway 101. The campground operates seasonally from mid-June through mid-September, providing 94 campsites set among scattered oaks that offer mixed sun and shade. Sites are spacious with approximately 30-50 feet between neighbors. Sixteen sites are tent-only, while the remaining sites accommodate tents, trailers up to 24 feet, and RVs up to 30 feet. The park protects some of California's southernmost old-growth coast redwoods, many exceeding 1,000 years old and 300 feet tall. Campers can explore a walk-through tree and growth-ring exhibit dating to 1933. The South Fork Eel River runs through the park, supporting salmon, steelhead, and Pacific lamprey. Wildlife includes black-tailed deer, gray foxes, river otters, and occasional bears and mountain lions. Reservations are available through ReserveCalifornia up to six months in advance, with a maximum stay of 15 days per calendar year. Pets are allowed but must be leashed during the day and kept in vehicles or tents at night. Service animals only are permitted on hiking trails.
