Richardson Grove Sp Campground

Open

Madrone Campground is currently open for walk-in camping with self-registration (cash/check only) through May 24. Full-season reservations for Huckleberry, Madrone, and Dawn Redwood Group Camp begin a week before Memorial Day weekend. Oak Flat opens mid-June through mid-September. Durphy Creek Trail is closed due to a rockslide; all other trails and facilities remain open.

About

Richardson Grove State Park preserves a magnificent stand of coast redwoods in southern Humboldt County, providing an accessible introduction to old-growth forest camping. The park's three family campgrounds nestle among the giant trees: Madrone and Huckleberry operate year-round for reservations during peak season, while Oak Flat opens only mid-June through mid-September. Sites are well-spaced and shaded, each equipped with a picnic table, fire ring with grill, and bear-resistant food locker. The South Fork Eel River runs through the park, offering seasonal swimming and fishing opportunities. A network of short trails loops through the grove, including the accessible Grove Nature Trail and Redwood Exhibit Trail near the visitor center. The visitor center features interpretive displays on redwood ecology and a small store for supplies. Restrooms with flush toilets and hot showers are available in the camping areas. Vehicle size is a critical consideration: the narrow curves of Highway 101 through the grove limit RVs to 30 feet and trailers to 24 feet. The park does not have an RV dump station. Dogs are allowed in the campgrounds but prohibited on trails except for service animals.

Directions

Located on US Highway 101 approximately 8 miles south of Garberville in Humboldt County. The highway passes directly through the grove. Note the tight curves through the park which restrict RV and trailer lengths.
