About

Reef Townsite Campground occupies the historic site of Reef, a mining town that operated from the late 1800s through the 1950s. The property returned to public ownership in 1970, and the Forest Service constructed the campground in 1988, placing tent pads and picnic tables within the outlines of old cabin foundations. At 7,200 feet elevation in the Huachuca Mountains, the campground provides relief from the surrounding desert heat. The campground features 16 individual campsites and one reservable group site that accommodates up to 50 people. The group area includes a picnic shelter with six tables, two large charcoal grills, food preparation tables, and a shaded tent area. Vault toilets are available, but there is no potable water. Garbage bins are provided. The three-quarter-mile Reef Townsite Loop Trail begins at the northeastern edge of the campground, offering views and interpretive information about the area's mining heritage. Black bears inhabit the area, requiring proper food storage. Access via Carr Canyon Road involves steep grades and tight switchbacks, restricting trailers to 12 feet maximum.
