Redbird State Recreation Area

Open

Open year-round. Trails operate sunrise to sunset daily with potential closures during hazardous conditions. Reservations for group shelters can be made 2 days to 12 months in advance through the Indiana State Parks reservation system.

About

Named after the historic Redbird Coal Mine, this 1,400-acre recreation area in Greene County represents one of Indiana's most successful land reclamation projects. The property features approximately 50 miles of professionally designed and maintained off-road vehicle trails accommodating all skill levels and vehicle types, from beginner-friendly routes to technically challenging terrain for experienced riders. The facility offers three group shelters rather than traditional campsites: Bluejay Shelter (30-person capacity), Cardinal Shelter (30-person capacity), and Whitetail Shelter (64-person capacity). All shelters are ADA accessible and allow pets. The shelters do not include electric hookups, water hookups, fire rings, or dump station access. Restrooms and parking are available on the property. Beyond motorized recreation, the area welcomes hikers, mountain bikers, and anglers seeking quality fishing lakes. Non-motorized and electric boats are permitted. Mushroom hunting is also popular in season. Trails operate sunrise to sunset daily, with potential closures during hazardous conditions.
