Light accumulations less than an inch are possible focused especially across the northern half of central Indiana. Untreated roads will become slick and snow covered. About

Named after the Redbird Coal Mine, Redbird State Recreation Area encompasses approximately 1,400 acres of former surface and underground coal mine land near Dugger in Greene County. Its unique history has created both diverse recreation opportunities and ongoing reclamation challenges. The property is Indiana's first state-owned area designated for off-road vehicle recreation, with approximately 50 miles of professionally marked, managed, and maintained trails. The trail system accommodates all vehicle types and skill levels, from gentle slopes to technically difficult terrain. Four trails are eligible for Jeep's Badge of Honor program, and the property welcomes dirt bikes, ATVs, UTVs, full-size vehicles, and home-built rigs. DOT-approved helmets are required except in vehicles with fully enclosed metal cabs or roll bar protection. All Indiana ORVs must be registered or street legal, while out-of-state vehicles may purchase an annual trail use permit at the gate. Beyond motorized recreation, the property offers easily accessed fishing lakes, extensive hiking opportunities across most of the property, popular mushroom hunting, and mountain biking. As reclamation projects continue, additional non-motorized trails, picnic areas, accessible walking and biking trails, and interpretive areas about coal mining operations are planned. Whether traversing thick wooded acres or challenging hills and ravines, visitors find both technical thrills and natural beauty at this reclaimed industrial landscape.
