Galveston Island State Park

Open

Open year-round. Some boardwalks closed due to flood and storm damage. The water/electric campground will be closed September 1, 2026 through January 1, 2027 for a construction project.

About

Galveston Island State Park occupies over 2,000 acres on the west end of Galveston Island, bisected by FM 3005 into beach side and bay side sections. The Gulf-facing beach side offers direct access to sandy shores with premium and standard electric/water campsites, tent platforms, and primitive hike-in sites tucked behind the dunes. The bay side fronts West Galveston Bay, with calmer waters suited to kayaking, wade fishing, and birding along boardwalks and observation platforms. Camping options range from full-hookup RV sites with 20/30/50-amp electric service to primitive dry camping for those seeking a simpler setup. Beach side premium sites include individual picnic tables and fire rings, while bay side sites share communal fire rings and a pavilion. Restrooms with accessible showers serve both areas. A nature center opens on weekends, and the park loans beach wheelchairs from headquarters. The park's coastal wetlands, tidal flats, and dune systems host diverse birdlife, making it a popular birding destination. Anglers can target speckled trout, redfish, and flounder from the bay shore or surf. The park often reaches capacity on weekends and holidays, so advance reservations through the Texas State Parks system are strongly recommended.
