Special Weather Statement issued September 16 at 6:00AM EDT by NWS Jackson KY

6:00 AM — 7:00 PM

Plenty of sunshine and a dome of heat will sent temperatures into the low to mid 90s for most of the area today and Thursday. When combined with higher than normal humidities this results in heat indices from 95 to 100 degrees for much of eastern Kentucky both afternoons. There is only scant chances for showers or storms to provide limited and localized relief through Thursday. Try to limit time outdoors today during the afternoon, when heat illness is most likely to occur. If going outdoors, drink plenty of fluids and take breaks out of the sun.

About

Cumberland Falls State Resort Park, dubbed the Niagara of the South, offers camping adjacent to one of the most impressive waterfalls east of the Rockies. The 125-foot waterfall on the Cumberland River creates a unique natural phenomenon: a moonbow, or lunar rainbow, visible only here and at Victoria Falls in Africa. The campground spreads across two loops with 50 sites total, including 29 tent sites and 21 standard electric RV sites with 20, 30, and 50-amp service. The campground provides solid amenities including a bath house with hot showers, flush restrooms, a dump station, and laundry facilities. Each site comes equipped with a fire ring and picnic table. Campers have access to the park's Olympic-size swimming pool for a small fee, along with a gift shop and snack shack. The 17 miles of hiking trails wind through hemlock forests and along the Cumberland River, connecting to backpacking routes in the Daniel Boone National Forest. Beyond the waterfall, the park offers fishing on the Cumberland River, seasonal horseback riding from Memorial Day through October, white-water rafting, and canoeing. Note that the maximum RV length allowed is 30 feet, making this campground better suited for smaller rigs and tent campers.
