Austin F. Hawes Memorial Campground is nestled in pine woods within American Legion State Forest in Barkhamsted, Connecticut. The campground sits alongside the West Branch of the Farmington River, designated as a Wild and Scenic River by the National Park Service, making it a prime location for trout fishing, canoeing, kayaking, and tubing. The forest spans nearly 3,900 acres combined with neighboring Peoples State Forest. The campground offers 30 spacious tent/RV sites with a 35-foot equipment length limit, plus 6 rustic two-room cabins that sleep up to six. Amenities include flush toilets, hot showers, dishwashing facilities, potable water, dump station, fire rings with grates, and picnic tables. Firewood and ice are available for purchase. Pull-through and back-in sites are available, with two ADA-accessible sites. Beyond camping, visitors can explore over 11 miles of hiking trails, 200-year-old white pine groves at Matthies Grove and Whittemore Recreation Areas, the historic Barkhamsted Lighthouse site, and seasonal hunting opportunities. Winter activities include cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. One leashed pet is permitted per site.
