Providence Mountains State Recreation Area sits in a remote corner of the Mojave Desert in San Bernardino County, about 100 miles east of Barstow. The park protects rugged desert terrain in the Providence Mountains, with elevations ranging from 2,600 to over 7,000 feet. The centerpiece attraction is Mitchell Caverns, a pair of connected limestone caves featuring impressive stalactites, stalagmites, and other formations accessible via guided tours. The campground has five developed sites available Friday and Saturday nights only, with reservations required through ReserveCalifornia. Sites accommodate up to 8 people and 2 vehicles. The setting is primitive with vault restrooms but no potable water, no showers, no hookups, and no trash service. Visitors must be fully self-sufficient, bringing all water needed for drinking, cooking, and washing. The nearest services are over 50 miles away, and cell coverage is unreliable. The park operates September through June and closes during the hottest summer months of July and August. The front gate closes at 5 PM, though campers arriving later can call ahead for a gate code. Directions

From Interstate 40, take the Essex Road exit and head north approximately 16 miles to the park entrance. The road is paved but winding. The park is located about 100 miles east of Barstow and 56 miles from the nearest town with services.
