About

Pine Hills Campground is a primitive, first-come-first-served campground located in Shawnee National Forest near the LaRue-Pine Hills Research Natural Area in Union County, Illinois. The campground offers level campsites with open grassy areas between sites, vault toilets, fire rings, picnic tables, lantern posts, and a group picnic shelter. No potable water is available, so campers must bring their own supply. The campground is particularly popular with hunters during spring and fall seasons, and serves as an excellent base for birders, hikers, and nature enthusiasts. The nearby LaRue-Pine Hills area features dramatic limestone bluffs and the famous Snake Road, which closes biannually to protect migrating reptiles and amphibians. Scenic drives, overlooks, and hiking trails are all easily accessible from the campground. Sites cost $10 per night (cash or check only) and accommodate up to 8 people and 2 vehicles. Interagency Senior/Access pass holders receive a 50% discount on single sites. The maximum stay is 14 consecutive days. Checkout is 2:00 p.m. and quiet hours are 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.
