About

Trail of Tears State Park provides reservable picnic shelters set within 3,415 acres along the Mississippi River in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri. The park serves as a memorial to the Cherokee people who crossed the Mississippi River at this location during their forced relocation in 1838-1839. The Wescoat Shelter is the primary reservable shelter facility, accommodating up to 100 people with amenities including modern restrooms, water, electricity, lighting, fireplace grills, picnic tables, and a nearby playground. Note that this area has potential for flooding from March through June. Beyond shelter reservations, the park offers rich recreational opportunities including 14.5 miles of hiking and equestrian trails through wooded terrain, fishing in both the Mississippi River and Lake Boutin, and beach swimming access. The park's visitor center features exhibits interpreting the Trail of Tears tragedy as well as displays of local wildlife. The location along the Mississippi River makes this one of Missouri's premier spots for viewing migratory waterfowl, bald eagles, and experiencing majestic river views.
