About

Lake Murphysboro State Park occupies 1,022 acres of rolling forested terrain in Jackson County, about one mile west of Murphysboro. The star-shaped 145-acre lake, constructed in 1950, reaches depths of 36 feet and spans 7.5 miles of shoreline through oak-hickory woodlands. Archaeological evidence shows habitation by Old Woodland and Paleolithic cultures, with a federal salt works operating here until 1840. The Big Oak Campground provides 54 trailer sites with electric hookups and 20 tent sites. A shower house with flush toilets serves campers, while vault toilets are also available. A sanitary dump station sits near the trailer area. Three Class A accessible sites (41, 47, 51) feature concrete pads, wheelchair-accessible tables, and grills. The park includes a composite wheelchair-accessible fishing dock and boat ramp. Native orchids including yellow lady's slipper and coralroot bloom seasonally throughout the property. The lake supports populations of largemouth bass, bluegill, redear sunfish, and channel catfish. All campers must obtain a permit from the site office, and reservations can be made through ExploreMoreIL.
