Philpott Park
Closed — Closed for the season. Typically operates April through October. The group camping area is managed by Henry County Parks and Recreation.
Special Weather Statement issued April 12 at 2:03PM EDT by NWS Blacksburg VA
The combination of 10 hour fuel moistures around 7 to 10 percent, relative humidities around 25 to 30 percent, and wind gusts around 20 to 25 mph will lead to an increased risk for the rapid spread of wildfires on Monday. Residents and visitors are urged to properly dispose of cigarette butts, matches, and any other flammable items in appropriate containers. Additionally, exercise caution if operating any equipment that could create sparks and keep vehicles off of dry grass. Most dry grasses, dead leaves, and other tree litter could easily ignite and spread fire quickly. Lastly, remember to obey local burn bans. For more information about wildfire danger, burn restrictions, and wildfire prevention and education, please visit your state forestry or environmental protection website. About
Philpott Park is nestled on the shores of Philpott Lake in the rugged foothills of Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains. The park offers a group camping area and day-use picnic shelter with spectacular views of the lake and mountains. Amenities include flush toilets, showers, and drinking water. An on-site boat ramp, playground, hiking trail, and the Philpott Dam Visitor Center provide plenty of recreational opportunities. Philpott Lake covers 2,900 acres with 100 miles of shoreline where steep, rocky banks meet beautiful mixed forests of oak, maple, hickory, pine and cedar. The lake's clear water makes it ideal for boating, swimming, and fishing for largemouth and smallmouth bass, walleye, bluegill, crappie and catfish. Many miles of hiking and biking trails surround the lake, allowing visitors to explore this scenic area. Wildlife is abundant throughout the area, with deer, turkeys, squirrels, raccoons, and a variety of songbirds and waterfowl commonly viewed. The lake is adjacent to Fairystone State Park and Fairystone Farms Wildlife Management Area, providing access to over 5,300 acres of public recreational lands.
