Mayo River State Park

Open — The campground is currently open and accepting reservations year-round through the North Carolina State Parks reservation system.

Special Weather Statement issued March 23 at 8:34AM EDT by NWS Blacksburg VA

8:34 AM — 7:00 PM

The combination of dry fine fuels, relative humidities between 20 and 30 percent, northwest wind gusts in excess of 20 mph, and warm temperatures will lead to an increased risk for the rapid spread of wildfires this afternoon. Residents and visitors are urged to properly dispose of cigarette butts, matches, and any other flammable items in appropriate containers. Additionally, exercise caution if operating any equipment that could create sparks and keep vehicles off of dry grass. Most dry grasses, dead leaves, and other tree litter could easily ignite and spread fire quickly. Lastly, remember to obey local burn bans. For more information about wildfire danger, burn restrictions, and wildfire prevention and education, please visit your state forestry or environmental protection website. Virginia residents are reminded that open burning is prohibited before 4 PM each day through April 30th.

About

Mayo River State Park, one of North Carolina's newer state parks established in 2003, protects sections of the Mayo River from the Virginia state line to its confluence with the Dan River. The park's primitive group campsite is located at the Mayo Mountain Access, the park's main facility area that opened in 2010. The campground accommodates up to 40 people and features an open field suitable for tent camping. The site is set away from the main day-use facilities. The group camp provides basic amenities including a pit privy, fire ring for campfires, picnic tables, and running water. This is a tent-only facility with no hookups or individual campsites. Campers have access to the park's other amenities including hiking trails, fishing ponds, picnic areas, and the park office. The park encompasses multiple access points along the Mayo River, including the DeShazo Mill access with its scenic waterfall along Fall Creek.
