Phi Kappa Campground

Closed

Closed for the season. Opens May 31, 2026 and operates through September 30. First-come, first-served with no reservations. Potable water from hand-pump is only available during the operating season.

About

Phi Kappa Campground is a rustic Forest Service campground nestled in a beautiful wooded setting along Trail Creek Road in Idaho's Salmon-Challis National Forest. The 21 individual campsites offer a quiet retreat for those seeking a primitive camping experience in the mountains between Mackay and Sun Valley. Amenities are basic but functional: two vault toilets serve the campground, and a hand-pump provides potable water during the operating season (note that the water has a natural rusty color). The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservations available. Sites are $10 per night, with a 50% discount for Interagency Senior and Access Pass holders. The campground's location makes it an excellent staging point for outdoor recreation including fishing in nearby streams, OHV riding, and hiking. Popular destinations in the area include Kane Lake, Big Fall Creek Lake, and the Phi Kappa Trail. The Sun Valley/Ketchum resort area is also accessible via Trail Creek Road.

Directions

From Mackay, take US Highway 93 approximately 16 miles north to Trail Creek Road. Turn left onto Trail Creek Road (#208) and follow it 23 miles to the campground. From Sun Valley/Ketchum, take Highway 75 (Main Street) to Sun Valley Road, which becomes Trail Creek Road, and continue 23 miles to the campground.
