About

Peters Creek Campground offers a quiet, free camping experience on the east shore of Hungry Horse Reservoir, 42 miles south of the town of Hungry Horse via gravel East Side Reservoir Road #38. At 3,600 feet elevation, the 6-site campground sits in second-growth forest with sites positioned less than 100 feet from the reservoir. The campground sees light use and typically has open sites available, making it a reliable option for those seeking solitude or a base for huckleberry picking, fishing, or late-season hunting. All sites include picnic tables and metal fire rings and can accommodate tents and trailers up to 30 feet. An accessible vault toilet is provided. There is no potable water; reservoir water is available but must be treated. Pack-it-in, pack-it-out rules apply as there is no garbage service. A food storage order requires all food, garbage, and attractants be stored in bear-resistant containers or otherwise kept unavailable to bears. Stock animals are prohibited. This is a remote location with no cell phone service. The nearest phone, gas, and supplies are 42 miles north in Hungry Horse. The Spotted Bear Ranger Station, 13 miles south, has a public phone. The campground is maintained May 15 through September 30; the access road between mileposts 37 and 53 is closed December 1 through May 14 for wildlife protection.
