About

Pickaroon Campground sits at the confluence of Douglas Creek and the North Platte River at approximately 7,800 feet elevation in Carbon County, Wyoming. The campground provides 8 primitive sites in a cottonwood and grass setting just above the river, adjacent to the 6-site Pike Pole Campground. Together they serve as the primary access point to the Platte River Wilderness via the Douglas Creek Trail, a 9.3-mile route following the creek upstream. The area is known for excellent wild trout fishing and backcountry hunting access. Being wedged between two designated wilderness areas, it offers true solitude. Sites have fire rings and picnic tables but no potable water. A vault toilet is available. The campground is managed with minimal services and maintenance; campers should be self-sufficient and prepared for rough road conditions. Access is via Forest Road 3423, an unmaintained route requiring 4WD or high-clearance vehicles. The drive from Laramie via WY-230 and FR-512 is approximately 28 miles on unpaved roads. Note that some historic access routes through private ranch land are now gated; confirm current road access before departing.

Directions

From Laramie: Take WY-230 west for 36 miles to the Foxpark turnoff at Forest Road 512. Turn right onto FR-512 and continue south approximately 20 miles to the junction with FR-3423. Turn right onto FR-3423 and proceed to the campground and Douglas Creek Trailhead. The final section is unmaintained and 4WD is strongly recommended.
