About

Paddle Creek Horse Campground is located in the Ironton Unit of Wayne National Forest in Lawrence County, Ohio. This primitive horse camp consists of a large, level mowed field with ample space for horse trailers and horses. Hitching rails are provided, and the site can accommodate approximately 100 people and horses. The campground is free to use with no reservation system. The campground serves as both a camping area and trailhead for the Lake Vesuvius Horse Trail System, which spans 46.66 miles across 9 trails. The trails wind through some of Ohio's most striking landscapes, leading riders through varied vegetation, past rock cliffs, waterfalls, streams, and along ridge tops. While designed primarily for horseback riding, the trails also welcome hikers. Facilities are primitive: vault toilets are available, but there is no potable water, so campers must bring their own supply. Campfires are permitted with a 10-foot clearance and a rock ring. The campground is open year-round for camping and hiking, though horseback riding trails are seasonally closed from winter to early spring.
