Paddle Creek Horse Campground

Open — Open year-round for camping. Horse trails close seasonally on January 5, 2026, but reopen later in the year.

About

Paddle Creek Horse Campground is a primitive equestrian camping area located in the Ironton Unit of Wayne National Forest in southeastern Ohio. The campground consists of a large, level, mowed field with ample space for trailers and horses, accommodating approximately 100 people and horses. Some hitching rails are provided for convenience. The site serves as both a campground and trailhead for the Lake Vesuvius Horse Trail System, which features 46.66 miles of trails across 9 different trail routes and connects to 4 trailheads. This is a no-frills camping experience with vault toilets available but no potable water, electricity, or other modern amenities. Campers must bring their own water and supplies. The rustic setting appeals to horseback riders seeking access to extensive trail networks through hardwood and coniferous forests, rock shelters, and the rugged hills of southeastern Ohio. A dump station is available near the main Lake Vesuvius area for those traveling with RVs.
