About
Iron Creek Horse Camp provides a secluded setting for equestrian camping in the Hell Canyon Ranger District of Black Hills National Forest. Located 13 miles outside Custer, South Dakota, the campground sits adjacent to Iron Creek and is surrounded by ponderosa pine forests. The facility was specifically designed for stock campers and features 9 sites with corrals that can accommodate 2-3 horses each. Recent enhancements funded through campground user fees have improved both the visual appeal and comfort of the sites. Each site includes a picnic table, fire pit with grill, and parking area. Two vault toilets serve the campground, and a gravity feed water line provides water to two horse troughs for stock watering. The campground can accommodate rigs up to 50 feet in length, though the access roads are curvy. The campground provides exceptional access to trail systems including the Centennial Trail, Black Elk Wilderness Area, and Norbeck Wildlife Preserve. These trails offer primitive, non-motorized recreational experiences through rugged terrain where elk, deer, bighorn sheep, and diverse bird species can be observed. Nearby attractions include Custer State Park, Crazy Horse Monument, Wind Cave National Park, and Jewel Cave.
