About

Gould Mesa Trail Camp offers a quick wilderness escape for hikers in the Los Angeles area. Located just 2 miles from the Ventura Street trailhead in La Cañada Flintridge, this primitive campground provides five hike-in sites along the Gabrielino National Recreation Trail. The 5.1-mile round trip hike involves roughly 300 feet of elevation change, making it accessible for most hikers. The trail camp sits at 1,500 feet elevation in a canyon setting with riparian groves along a tranquil stream surrounded by steep ridges. Each site includes a picnic table and fire ring. Vault toilets and trash receptacles are provided, but there is no potable water; a seasonal stream can be filtered or treated, though water flow may be low or non-existent during dry periods. An equestrian hitching rail with 52 linear feet of space accommodates horse-supported camping. Alternate access is available from Altadena near the Jet Propulsion Laboratories, following the Gabrielino Trail through riparian groves. The campground is free, first-come first-served, and receives heavy use, particularly on weekends.

Directions

From Interstate 210 West in La Cañada, take Windsor Ave exit. Turn right on Windsor to Ventura St and park. Take the Gabrielino Trail 2 miles to the campground. Alternate route: From I-210, exit at Angeles Crest Highway (Hwy 2) and head north about 2 miles. Park on the right before entering the forest and hike the dirt road 1 mile past the power substation to the campground.
