About
North River Campground is a rustic 9-site campground nestled in the George Washington National Forest near Staunton, Virginia. Originally constructed as a Civilian Conservation Corps camp, evidence of the original sites and logging trails still remain today. The campground serves as a gateway to North River Gorge, a popular destination featuring a swinging bridge spanning the North River, excellent stream fishing, and miles of hiking and mountain biking trails. The campground is situated within easy reach of several recreational attractions including the Wild Oak National Recreation Trail, Stanton Dam Day Use Area, and Elkhorn Lake. Each campsite accommodates up to 8 people with a maximum of 2 vehicles, and is equipped with a picnic table, fire ring, and lantern post. Sites can hold one RV or two tents. This is a primitive campground with vault toilets but no potable water, so campers must bring their own drinking water. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no advance reservations. Quiet hours are enforced from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash no longer than 6 feet.
