About
The North Grove Environmental campsites at Calaveras Big Trees State Park provide a more primitive camping experience for those seeking solitude among the giant sequoias. Located approximately 1.5 miles from the park entrance, these walk-in sites require a short hike but offer a peaceful setting away from the main campgrounds. Each environmental site is equipped with a picnic table, fire ring, pit toilet, and bear locker for proper food storage, essential in this area with a thriving black bear population. Established in 1931, Calaveras Big Trees State Park preserves two groves of giant sequoias, some of the world's largest trees. The environmental sites are situated near the North Grove, offering easy access to hiking trails through these magnificent trees. The park features a mixed conifer forest with flowing rivers, meadows, and miles of trails. The North Grove area remains accessible year-round, with the Visitor Center, interpretive trails, and day use areas nearby. These sites are ideal for experienced campers comfortable with walk-in access and minimal facilities. Campers must bring their own water as none is available at the environmental sites. The park is located at 4,800 feet elevation on Highway 4, about four miles northeast of Arnold. Summer temperatures reach the 80s with lows in the 50s, while spring and fall can bring rain or snow. Proper food storage in the provided bear lockers is mandatory to protect wildlife.
Directions
The park is located four miles northeast of Arnold on Highway 4. From the Bay Area, take I-580 east to I-205 toward Manteca, to US 99 North, then Highway 4 east through Angels Camp. Environmental sites are a short walk from the parking area about 1.5 miles from the park entrance.
