About

Leave the city behind as you wind down a partially paved, narrow road into Middle Lion Campground. Surrounded by chaparral-covered mountains and shaded by cottonwood trees, this small canyon campground sits alongside a running creek near the Sespe Wilderness. Spring and fall bring wildflowers and vibrant yellow foliage, though camping is enjoyable year-round. The campground offers eight sites along a single loop, each equipped with a fire ring and picnic table. A vault toilet is available, but there is no potable water, so bring your own supply. Cell service is nonexistent, and help is miles away, so come prepared. The Lion Canyon Trail (22W06) begins at the back of the campground, connecting to the Rose Lion Connector Trail after 1.3 miles. From there, side trails lead to East Fork and West Fork Lion Camps in the Sespe Wilderness, while the main trail continues 3.6 miles to Nordhoff Ridge for spectacular views. Rose Valley Falls and Piedra Blanca trailhead are nearby.

Directions

Follow Highway 33 north of Ojai for 14.7 miles to the Rose Valley Road turnoff (6N31) at mile marker 25.84. Turn right and follow the paved road 4.8 miles. Turn right and go 0.8 miles to Middle Lion Campground. Elevation is 3,250 feet. Watch for rough sections of road.
