About

Located at a cool 9,200 feet elevation along the scenic Highway 536, Nine Mile Picnic Site offers a shaded retreat in the Sandia Mountains. The site underwent extensive renovations to create a combination of single, double, and group picnic areas, all available on a first-come, first-served basis. The heavily wooded area features aspen, spruce, and fir trees with a mixture of level and hilly terrain. The renovated site includes vault toilets, hardened walkways, bear-safe trash receptacles, information boards, and accessible parking. Each picnic site is equipped with tables and a grill. The picnic ground is subject to a standard amenity fee, and no water or electricity is available on-site. Nine Mile Picnic Site provides convenient access to several trails, including the popular Challenge Trail #233, and offers excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing. The site is located along the Sandia Crest Scenic Byway, which features numerous other Forest Service recreation sites and provides access to the Sandia Crest area with its aerial tramway. No overnight camping is permitted at this day-use facility.
