About

Pine Flat Picnic Sites A and B are accessible day-use picnic areas in the Cibola National Forest's Sandia Ranger District, situated at 7,240 feet elevation along State Highway 337 (James McGrane Memorial Highway), approximately 7 miles south of I-40. Built by the Forest Service in 1956 specifically for large group use, this facility features two reservable picnic sites located to the left as you enter. Each reservable site can accommodate up to 50 people and is shaded by a mix of pinon, juniper, scrub oak, and ponderosa pine trees. Cool mountain breezes make this an ideal spot for group gatherings and relaxation. The area's relatively flat terrain at the entrance makes it easy to park trailers and unload OHVs or horses. To the right of the entrance, visitors will find pull-through trailer parking, regular vehicle parking spaces, and dispersed picnic tables available on a first-come, first-served basis at no charge. The Pine Flat Connector Trailhead is also located on-site, providing access to the extensive Manzanita Mountains Trail System. This multiuse trail system accommodates hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and OHV use, with loops and straightaways suited to various skill levels. The historic Cedro Cemetery and the town of Tijeras are located about five miles away. No overnight camping is permitted at this day-use facility.

Directions

From Albuquerque, drive east on I-40 to Tijeras Exit 175. At the traffic light drive straight ahead and continue south for 7 miles on NM 337 (James McGrane Memorial Highway). Look for the Cibola National Forest - Pine Flat Picnic Area sign on the east side of the road. Reservable sites A and B are located to your left as you enter.
