About
Las Huertas Picnic Site occupies a scenic stretch along Las Huertas Creek at the northeast end of the Sandia Ranger District in Cibola National Forest. Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps between 1933 and 1941, the site preserves historic architecture including a group pavilion designed in the original CCC style. At 7,600 feet elevation, the area is shaded by aspen and fir trees, with the sound of the creek audible throughout. The site offers dispersed picnic areas on a first-come, first-served basis, each with tables and grills suitable for small family groups. The reservable group pavilion can host up to 50 people under a covered shelter with multiple tables and grills. Accessible vault toilets and bear-proof trash receptacles are provided. No potable water is available; bring your own supply. This is a day-use area only. Overnight camping is prohibited. Nearby attractions include Sandia Man Cave to the north and the town of Placitas for restaurants and services.
Directions
From Albuquerque, drive north on I-25 to Exit 242 (Bernalillo/State Hwy 165). Stay right as you exit the ramp and proceed east on State Road 165 through Placitas. The road curves south into the Sandia Mountain range. Las Huertas Picnic Site will be on your right. Display an amenity/parking pass or pay $5 day-use fee.
