About

Las Huertas Picnic Site was constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps between 1933 and 1941 and remains a favorite recreation destination in the northeast section of the Sandia Ranger District. Located at 7,600 feet elevation, the site is situated along Las Huertas Creek, the only year-round stream in the Sandia Mountain range. The sound of flowing water accompanies visitors throughout the picnic area, drawing birds and wildlife to the grounds. Pathways and footbridges meander through the forest, leading to dispersed picnic tables and grills tucked away in the shade of aspen and fir trees. The group site pavilion is a faithful replica of the 1930s Civilian Conservation Corps design, honoring the legacy of the workers who built this site. The area is ideal for picnicking, bird watching, and nature appreciation, though overnight camping is not permitted. The picnic site requires a day use fee, and visitors must display an amenity pass or interagency pass. Advanced reservations are available through Recreation.gov for the group pavilion. Nearby attractions include Sandia Man Cave and the communities of Placitas and Bernalillo, which offer additional amenities and services.
