The Cabin

The cabin is currently closed for the season. The Nevada Creek Road is not plowed or maintained during winter months, and access can be difficult or impossible through early spring depending on snowpack. Reservations are made through Recreation.gov.

About

This historic one-room log cabin sits on National Forest lands along the upper reaches of Nevada Creek, between Avon and Helmville, Montana. At 5,400 feet elevation in a thick lodgepole pine forest, the cabin provides access to a largely intact ecosystem in the northern Rocky Mountains. The entire surrounding area to the north, east, and south is protected as an Inventoried Roadless Area, offering excellent solitude and exploration opportunities. The cabin sleeps 2-4 guests with one bunk bed and one full-size bed. Amenities include a wood stove for heat, propane stove and lights for cooking and illumination, and basic kitchen supplies including dishes, pots, pans, and utensils. A vault toilet is located nearby, and potable water is available from a hand pump well. Guests must bring their own bedding or sleeping bags, as only mattresses are provided. Hikers and horse riders can connect to the Continental Divide Trail via Nevada Creek Trail #466, about 5 miles of gentle terrain from the cabin. Other nearby trails include the Prickly-Nevada Trail, Helmville-Gould Trail, and Washington Gulch. All trails in the area are non-motorized. Nevada Creek offers small pools for cooling off in summer, and the huckleberry picking can be excellent. Elk and deer are common, making this an ideal base for hunting trips.

Directions

From Highway 141 between Avon and Helmville, turn east onto Nevada Creek Road (FR #296), which is well signed with Forest Access signs. Stay on FR #296 for approximately 7 miles, passing through private land for the first several miles. The cabin turnoff is marked with a large sign. Use the combination lock code provided with your reservation to unlock the gate and drive the final few hundred yards to the cabin. FR #296 is a dirt road with occasional washboards and potholes; high clearance vehicles are recommended but not required.
