About
Negwegon State Park is a 4,118-acre undeveloped wilderness area on Michigan's Sunrise Coast, popular with backcountry campers, hikers, birdwatchers, and beachgoers. The park offers four hike-in campsites accessible via Sand Hill Trail: Blue Bell (1.1 miles), Twin Pines (1.6 miles), Pewabic (1.8 miles), and South Point (2.2 miles from the parking area). Each site is outfitted with a fire ring and cooking grate, picnic table, bear pole (campers must bring their own rope), bear box for food storage, and a backcountry composting privy. Potable water is available from an artesian well located between the parking lot and the beach, but campers must carry water to their sites. This is true backcountry camping with no trash service, so pack out all waste including pet waste. The park is designated as one of Michigan's Dark Sky Preserves, making it excellent for stargazing. Access to the park requires navigating a sandy two-track road; high-clearance or 4WD vehicles are recommended, especially after rain. The campground operates April through November with reservations available through MiDNRReservations.com. A Michigan Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry. Pets are allowed on trails with a 6-foot leash but are not permitted on the beach.
