Negwegon State Park Campground
Closed — Open for camping from April through November. Reservations available six months in advance through the Michigan DNR reservation system. Self-registration is no longer available.
Special Weather Statement issued February 10 at 5:19PM EST by NWS Gaylord MI
Expecting patchy freezing drizzle, possibly mixed with snow, to continue across the area through the evening. A glaze of ice is possible where freezing drizzle persists longest, particularly across areas that are already at or below freezing...such as the eastern UP and the interior higher terrain of northern Lower Michigan. The best chance for more snow to mix in will be across the eastern UP. Temperatures falling below freezing after dark this evening will further allow surfaces to turn slick. Be sure to leave extra time for travel, as roads may be slick, and take care walking on untreated surfaces.
About
Negwegon State Park Campground is a backcountry camping destination within a 4,000-acre rustic, undeveloped state park on the Lake Huron shoreline in Alpena County. The campground features four hike-in sites accessible via mostly flat trails ranging from 1.1 to 2.2 miles from the main parking lot off Sand Hill Trail. Each site is named and equipped with a fire ring with cooking grate, picnic table, bear pole (rope not provided), bear box, and backcountry composting privy. Potable water is available from a well located between the parking lot and the beach, but campers must carry water to their sites. The park's terrain is a mix of mature pine, hardwood, and aspen forest interspersed with lowland areas, small ridges, and open meadows. The park offers 8 miles of Lake Huron shoreline to explore, including a beautiful mile-long sandy beach. Paddlers can launch from the carry-in access located approximately 200 feet from the campground parking area. Designated as a dark sky preserve, Negwegon provides exceptional stargazing opportunities. The park is also open to hunting, and trails are available for hiking, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. Wildlife viewing includes bald eagles, Blanding's turtles, and diverse bird species.
