Mystery Saddle Camp is a primitive dispersed camping location at an alpine saddle on Forest Road 101 in the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests of north-central Idaho. The site sits at the junction of Forest Roads 101 and 486A, serving as a key waypoint for backcountry travelers accessing the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness and destinations like Walde Lookout Cabin. As an undeveloped dispersed camping area on national forest land, Mystery Saddle offers no established amenities. Campers must be fully self-sufficient, bringing all water, supplies, and packing out all trash. Standard USFS dispersed camping regulations apply, including the 14-day stay limit. Access is via Forest Road 101, which may be impassable during winter and early spring due to snow. The remote location near the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness boundary provides opportunities for solitude and access to backcountry hiking and hunting in the surrounding mountains.
Directions
From Kamiah, Idaho, travel east on US Highway 12. Turn north onto Forest Road 101 and continue approximately 10 miles to Mystery Saddle, located at the junction with Forest Road 486A.
