About

Johnson Bar Group Site is situated in a large, open field along the pristine Selway Wild and Scenic River in the heart of north central Idaho's rugged wilderness. Located within the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests, this accessible group campground can accommodate gatherings of up to 100 people with ample space for both tents and RVs. The site is positioned between the paved Selway River Road and the river, offering convenient access and stunning natural beauty. The group site features a large campfire circle, two additional campfire rings, multiple picnic tables, and drinking water from a hand pump. Vault toilets are adjacent to the site, and groups of 25 or more are required to rent portable toilets. Individual first-come, first-served campsites are also available on either side of the group site. The campground provides wheelchair-accessible facilities and a swimming beach along the river. The Selway River is renowned as a destination for fly fishing enthusiasts seeking cutthroat and rainbow trout in a catch-and-release fishery. The river is equally famous for spring whitewater rafting through the Wild and Scenic River Corridor. Several trailheads along Selway River Road provide access to the vast Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness for hiking and mountain biking. Nearby attractions include a scenic 11-mile drive to Selway Falls and the historic Fenn Ranger Station. The area supports diverse wildlife including elk, deer, moose, and black bears amid dramatic elevational changes ranging from dense cedar groves to high country ecosystems.

Directions

From Kooskia, travel east 22 miles on US Highway 12, then south 4.5 miles on Forest Road 223 (Selway River Road). The campground is located between the paved road and the river.
