Myakka State Forest Primitive Campsites offer a genuine backcountry camping experience in southwest Florida, located about an hour south of Sarasota. The forest encompasses over 8,600 acres of pine flatwoods, oak hammocks, and wetlands, with more than 40 miles of multi-use trails connecting the five primitive campsites: Flatwoods, Pine Straw, Watering Hole, Mangrove, and River. All sites are hike-in only, ranging from 1.5 to 3.2 miles from the nearest parking area, except for the River site which can also be reached by boat or paddle craft. Each site accommodates up to 8 people. These are minimalist backcountry sites with no potable water, electricity, or developed restroom facilities. Campers must pack in all water and supplies and be prepared for potentially muddy or wet trail conditions, especially during the rainy season. Firewood may be collected from the ground but cutting live trees is prohibited. Firewood is available for purchase at the Ranger Station. The forest is open to public hunting during certain seasons, so campers should check the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission schedule. A burn ban dashboard should be checked before reserving, as fire restrictions may be in effect depending on conditions.

Directions

From I-75, take Exit 191 and head south toward Englewood on River Road for approximately 9.5 miles. The forest entrance is on the left. From there, campers must hike 1.5 to 3.2 miles to reach the primitive campsites, or access the River site by boat.
