About
Flying A Campground is located within the Myakka State Forest in Sarasota County, approximately one hour south of Sarasota. The campground features 10 individual primitive campsites, each with trees on three sides providing natural privacy. Only sites 1, 3, 8, and 9 allow vehicles to park overnight at the campsite, while tent-only sites 2, 4, 5, 6, and 7 have parking for loading and unloading only, with vehicles then moved to a nearby parking area just a few feet away. The forest includes 2.5 miles of frontage on the Myakka River, designated as an Outstanding Florida Water and a Wild and Scenic River. Myakkahatchee Creek flows through the forest for 1.5 miles, providing additional water access. The terrestrial portion consists primarily of mesic flatwoods with mature longleaf and slash pine, and numerous depression marshes scattered throughout provide opportunities for viewing wading birds and other wildlife. Recreational opportunities include fishing along the Myakka River (accessible by foot or boat), hiking, off-road bicycling, horseback riding, and wildlife viewing. The forest offers over 40 miles of trails open to hiking, trail biking, and equestrian activities, with trails included in the Florida Forest Service's Trailwalker Hiking Program and Trailtrotter Equestrian Program. Public hunting occurs seasonally in the forest.
Directions
