Flying A Group Camp is located within Myakka State Forest in Sarasota County, approximately one hour south of Sarasota, Florida. This primitive group camping facility features a single site designed to accommodate organized groups of 10 to 20 visitors. The campground provides basic amenities including picnic tables, fire rings, and portable toilets, but does not offer water or electrical hookups, making it ideal for groups seeking an authentic wilderness experience. Myakka State Forest encompasses diverse ecosystems including mesic flatwoods with mature longleaf and slash pine, numerous depression marshes, and 2.5 miles of frontage along the Myakka River, designated as both an Outstanding Florida Water and a Wild and Scenic River. The forest offers over 40 miles of multi-use trails open for hiking, mountain biking, and equestrian activities, providing extensive opportunities for exploration. Wildlife viewing is exceptional, with frequent sightings of wading birds, deer, and other native species throughout the depression marshes and along the river. Recreational opportunities include fishing in the Myakka River and Myakkahatchee Creek with proper licensing, canoeing, kayaking, and access to hiking trails that lead to riverfront areas. The forest is also open to public hunting during designated seasons. Groups should come prepared for primitive conditions, including bringing their own water and properly storing food to protect it from raccoons and other wildlife. Firewood may be collected from the ground, though cutting or damaging trees is prohibited.

Directions

Take Exit 191 off I-75. Go south toward Englewood for 9.5 miles; the forest entrance is on the left. Upon entering the forest, continue 0.6 miles and the campground will be on the right.
