About

Temperance River State Park Campground is situated along Minnesota's North Shore between Schroeder and Tofte, where the Temperance River carves a dramatic gorge through ancient bedrock before emptying into Lake Superior. The campground is divided into two sections: the upper campground with 18 electric sites, and the lower campground with 34 non-electric sites, several offering excellent Lake Superior views. Six cart-in sites provide a more secluded camping experience close to the lake, with carts and bear-proof storage lockers provided. The park spans over 5,000 acres and features trails winding along both sides of the river gorge, showcasing multiple waterfalls including the Lower Falls and Hidden Falls. Hikers can connect to the Superior Hiking Trail network or climb Carlton Peak at 1,526 feet elevation for panoramic views. The Temperance River is a designated trout stream with established populations of brook and brown trout. The river was named for having no debris bar at its mouth due to its strong flow. The park's location provides warming lake breezes in winter and cooling breezes in summer, making it a year-round destination for camping, hiking, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing.
