About
William Mitchell State Park occupies 660 acres in Wexford County between Lake Mitchell and Lake Cadillac, with the historic Clam Lake Canal running through the property. Established in 1920 and named for local sawmill operator William W. Mitchell, the park has long been a popular camping, fishing, and boating destination in northern Michigan. The modern campground offers 221 sites nestled between the Clam Lake Canal and Lake Cadillac. Most sites are shaded by mature trees, with select spots along the canal. All sites feature electrical hookups (some with 50-amp service), picnic tables, and fire rings. Facilities include a toilet and shower building, sanitation station, drinking water, pull-through sites, and ADA-accessible sites. The park has two boat launches, an accessible fishing pier, swimming beach with buoyed swim area, playground, paddlesport rentals, and a camp store. Beyond camping, the 2.5-mile Heritage Nature Trail winds through woodlands and marshes. The Carl T. Johnson Hunting and Fishing Center offers exhibits on regional wildlife and educational programs. Winter brings ice fishing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing.
