About
Harding River Cabin is a remote wilderness cabin situated on the north side of Bradfield Canal at the mouth of the Harding River, about 31 air miles or 40 boat miles southeast of Wrangell, Alaska. Built in 1978, this 14-by-16-foot hunter-style cabin accommodates up to six guests with two single bunks and two double bunks. The cabin includes a table and benches, broom, and an oil stove for heat requiring No. 1 stove oil. A food storage locker sits on the partially covered front porch, and an outhouse is available. The surrounding rainforest of Sitka spruce, western hemlock, and scattered cedar creates prime habitat for brown and black bears, harbor seals, bald eagles, and migratory waterfowl. Gray whales are occasionally spotted in the nearby waters. The upper Bradfield Canal serves as a spring and fall stopover for waterfowl. Anglers will find excellent opportunities for cutthroat trout and Dolly Varden from May through September, steelhead in April and May, and silver and chum salmon in August and September. The canal offers excellent crabbing, though PSP (paralytic shellfish poisoning) levels should be checked before harvesting shellfish. Due to the gradual beach slope, visitors should anchor boats in deeper water and use a skiff or punt to reach shore. Guests must bring all supplies including sleeping bags, cooking gear, food, water, stove oil, toilet paper, and garbage bags for packing out trash.
