About

Helm Creek Cabin is a rustic 12x14-foot log cabin built in 1985, situated on the east shore of Helm Bay near the mouth of Helm Creek in Alaska's Tongass National Forest. Located approximately 24 miles from Ketchikan, this remote wilderness retreat is accessible only by floatplane, boat, or kayak. A first-come, first-served mooring buoy is positioned directly in front of the cabin, and a moderately steep sloping beach allows for skiff landings. The cabin sleeps up to 6 people with two single and two double bunks. Amenities include a wood stove for heating, a cooking counter, table with benches, shelves, cupboard space, and basic tools including an axe, maul, and splitting wedges. An outhouse provides sanitation. There is no electricity, potable water, or firewood provided. Water can be collected from nearby Helm Creek but must be treated before drinking. Helm Bay is renowned for excellent crabbing and saltwater fishing for salmon, halibut, and red snapper. Trout and Dolly Varden can be found in nearby Helm Lake, though no trail exists. The area is home to black and brown bears, Sitka black-tailed deer, mountain goats, and marine mammals including seals and whales. Visitors should consult local tide tables and be prepared for remote wilderness conditions.
