About

Long Lake Shelter is a remote three-sided Forest Service shelter situated at Long Lake in the Tongass National Forest, approximately 45 air miles north of Ketchikan. The shelter is accessed via floatplane or boat to Cut Point on the shore of Behm Narrows, then hiking the 1.4-mile Long Lake Trail to the shelter. This is a primitive backcountry facility with no developed amenities. The trail is not routinely maintained by the Forest Service and may be challenging to navigate. Potable water is not available, and visitors must be fully self-sufficient, bringing all necessary supplies, drinking water, and safety equipment. The area offers opportunities for day hiking, fishing, and experiencing the pristine wilderness of Southeast Alaska's temperate rainforest. Due to the remote location and lack of regular maintenance, this shelter is best suited for experienced backcountry travelers comfortable with navigation and wilderness self-reliance.
