About
Long Lake Shelter offers a remote wilderness experience in the Tongass National Forest, situated on the north end of Long Lake in Southeast Alaska. This three-sided shelter provides basic protection from the elements and is accessed via a 0.6-mile trail from the lake shore. The shelter location is remote, typically requiring floatplane or boat access to reach the trailhead. The Forest Service provides firewood and a 14-foot aluminum skiff with oars for rowing around the lake, though visitors must bring their own personal flotation devices. The shelter does not include bedding or cooking utensils, so campers must pack in all personal gear and supplies. The surrounding area offers opportunities for fishing, wildlife viewing, and experiencing the pristine rainforest environment characteristic of the Tongass. This is a primitive facility designed for self-sufficient campers comfortable with backcountry conditions. The shelter's three-sided design provides wind and rain protection while maintaining an open connection to the surrounding wilderness.
Directions
Located approximately 45 air miles north of Ketchikan at Cut Point in the Behm Narrows. Access is typically by floatplane or boat to Long Lake, then via a 0.6-mile trail to the shelter at the north end of the lake.
