About
Lookout Campground is a hidden gem located on the California/Nevada border just west of Reno, Nevada, at an elevation of 6,770 feet. Nestled within a lush aspen grove and surrounded by pine and fir forest, this remote campground offers visitors a peaceful retreat away from more developed areas. The 17 first-come, first-served campsites (including two double sites) are well-spaced throughout the grove, providing ample privacy for campers. Each site includes a picnic table, fire ring with grill, and tent pad, though facilities remain minimal to preserve the campground's rustic character. The surrounding area offers numerous recreational opportunities. Crystal Peak, accessible by vehicle or a short hike from the campground, is renowned for its impressive crystal formations. Rockhounding enthusiasts can visit the nearby Crystal Mine on Forest Road 033, with personal use limited to one 5-pound bucket per week. Dog Valley and Peavine Mountain provide popular terrain for OHV riding and mountain biking, while the American Discovery Trail passes through the area for hiking opportunities. Access requires traveling approximately 7-9 miles on dirt Forest Road 002 from Verdi, which can develop washboards but is typically navigable with two-wheel drive vehicles, though low-clearance vehicles are not recommended. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservations for individual sites, though a group picnic area accommodating up to 100 people is available by reservation. RVs and trailers should be limited to 15 feet, though two sites can accommodate up to 30 feet. No potable water is available, so campers must bring their own supply. Vault toilets are provided. A free California Camp Fire Permit issued by CalFire is required for all campfire, barbecue, and portable stove use. Dogs must be kept on leash within the campground.
