About
Perched on Big Flat Mountain at 3,300 feet elevation, Loft Mountain is one of the largest campgrounds in Shenandoah National Park. Located at Mile 79.5 on Skyline Drive, the campground provides outstanding views to both the east and west across the Blue Ridge Mountains and Shenandoah Valley. The 207 sites are spread across multiple loops, with a combination of reservable sites and first-come, first-served options. The campground serves as an excellent base for exploring the southern section of the park. Trails to the Big Run Wilderness area and pristine waterfalls are accessible directly from the campground. Over 500 miles of trails wind through the park, including 101 miles of the Appalachian Trail. Wildlife viewing opportunities are abundant, with black bears, deer, wild turkey, and numerous bird species throughout the area. Facilities include flush toilets, potable water, a dump station, coin-operated showers, laundry, and a camp store selling firewood and ice. Food storage lockers are provided at sites due to active bear presence. The campground accommodates tents and RVs with deep back-in sites, though no electric, water, or sewer hookups are available. Two ADA-accessible sites and accessible shower facilities are offered.
