Special Weather Statement issued May 22 at 11:08AM EDT by NWS Gaylord MI

11:08 AM — 8:00 PM

The combination of dry surface conditions, low afternoon relative humidity values, and gusty east to southeast winds will result in elevated fire danger conditions across northern lower Michigan this. Sustained winds of 7 to 15 mph with gusts of 20 to 30 mph will be seen over northern Michigan this afternoon. Minimum relative humidity values of 20 to 35 percent are expected over much of northern lower Michigan. These conditions could lead to rapid spread of fires. Check burning restrictions and fire danger before burning. For more information on burning restrictions for Michigan, see www.dnr.state.mi.us//.

About

Leelanau State Park Campground offers a quintessential northern Michigan camping experience at the tip of the scenic Leelanau Peninsula. The rustic campground features 51 sites split between waterfront locations along Lake Michigan's rocky shore and wooded sites tucked into the forest canopy of big trees. The distinctive cobblestone beach and dramatic shoreline views make this one of the most scenic campgrounds in the region. The campground operates as a rustic facility with vault toilets and potable water available via hand pumps and a filling station for trailers. Each site includes a picnic table and fire ring. Three mini cabins with covered porches are also available for those wanting a roof overhead. Modern amenities like electricity, showers, and dump stations are not available. Beyond camping, the park features the historic Grand Traverse Lighthouse and museum, the Cathead Bay trail system for hiking, an interactive playground, and a day-use picnic area with a reservable pavilion. The lighthouse dates to 1858 and offers tours during the summer season.
