About

Lake Whittlesey Campground is a remote backcountry destination within Isle Royale National Park, situated on the peaceful north shore of Lake Whittlesey. The campground features three individual tent sites in a wilderness setting characterized by birch forests and dramatic rock outcroppings. This is strictly a paddle-in campground with no trail or motorized boat access. Reaching Lake Whittlesey requires a canoe or kayak and a 0.6-mile portage from either Wood Lake to the west or Chippewa Harbor to the east. All overnight visitors must obtain a free backcountry permit upon arrival at Rock Harbor or Windigo. Sites operate first-come, first-served with a 3-night consecutive stay limit from June 1 through Labor Day (2 nights otherwise). The campground has composting toilets (seasonal) and a non-potable water source. Campers must filter and chemically treat all drinking water. Only self-contained backpacking stoves are permitted; open fires are prohibited. Food storage lockers are provided. Pets are not allowed anywhere in Isle Royale National Park.

Directions

Lake Whittlesey Campground is accessible only by canoe or kayak. Paddle and portage 0.6 miles from Wood Lake (west) or 0.6 miles from Chippewa Harbor (east). No trail access or private motorboat access. Isle Royale itself is reached by ferry from Houghton or Copper Harbor, Michigan, or Grand Portage, Minnesota, or by seaplane.
