About

Wood Lake Campground is a remote wilderness camping destination within Isle Royale National Park, positioned on the north shore of Wood Lake. This backcountry campground offers 3 first-come, first-served individual tent sites for small parties and is accessible exclusively by canoe or kayak. Paddlers must complete a 0.6-mile portage from either Lake Whittlesey or Siskiwit Lake, as there is no direct boat access to the site. The campground provides basic amenities including food storage lockers to protect against wildlife encounters, non-potable water, and seasonal composting toilets. There are no showers or potable water available. The terrain throughout the campground is uneven and rough, and facilities are not ADA accessible. Due to its remote inland location and portage access, this site attracts experienced paddlers and backpackers seeking solitude in Isle Royale's wilderness interior. Stay limits are enforced at 2 nights from June 1 through Labor Day annually. Self-contained stoves only are permitted; no ground fires are allowed. All visitors must obtain a free overnight camping permit. The campground operates on Isle Royale's seasonal schedule, typically from mid-April through late September or early October, when the park is open. Pets are not allowed, and quiet hours are observed from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. EDT.
