Wood Lake is one of the most isolated campgrounds in the park.
Open

Open for the 2026 season. Isle Royale operates April 16 through October 31 annually. A 2-night stay limit applies June 1 through Labor Day. Sites are first-come, first-served with free permits obtained upon arrival at Rock Harbor or Windigo.

About

Wood Lake Campground sits on the north shore of Wood Lake, deep in Isle Royale's wilderness interior. Part of the Chain of Lakes paddling route, the campground is reached by a 0.6-mile portage from Lake Whittlesey or from Siskiwit Lake. No motorized or private boat access is permitted. The campground has three individual tent sites, all first-come, first-served. Overnight stays require a free backcountry permit, obtained upon arrival at Rock Harbor, Windigo, or aboard the Ranger III ferry. Amenities are minimal: seasonal composting toilets and food storage lockers. Water from the lake is non-potable and must be treated before drinking. Open fires are prohibited; only self-contained backpacking stoves are allowed. A 2-night consecutive stay limit applies from June 1 through Labor Day. Pets are not permitted anywhere in Isle Royale National Park, including on boats within park boundaries. The park operates seasonally from April 16 through October 31.
