New Food Storage Guidelines to Reduce Human - Wildlife Interactions

Malone Bay Campground Shelters Closed Nights of July 29 - August 1, 2025

On these dates, the Malone Bay shelters are reserved for Agaaming Aki tribal summer youth camp. Isle Royale is within the traditional homelands of the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. The 2 group sites at Malone Bay will remain open.

On these dates, Duncan Bay Narrows campground will be closed for shelter and privy maintenance.

USCG Navigational Buoys Not in Water Until Mid-June

Boaters: Due to USCG season start-up delays, navigational buoys are not in Lake Superior waters around Isle Royale. Use caution around navigational channels. Buoys are estimated to be put in place by mid-June.

About

Lake Richie Campground is a wilderness camping destination located on the north shore of Lake Richie in Isle Royale National Park, accessible only by foot or canoe/kayak. The campground is situated along the Indian Portage Trail system, requiring visitors to portage from surrounding lakes: 0.6 miles from Intermediate Lake, 2.0 miles from Moskey Basin, 1.2 miles from Chippewa Harbor, or 0.6 miles from Lake LeSage. No private boat access is available. The campground features 6 total tent sites: 4 first-come, first-served individual sites and 2 group sites that must be reserved in advance. A 2-night stay limit is enforced from June 1 through Labor Day annually. Paddlers focused on canoe/kayak camping may want to consider staying at Lake Richie Canoe Campground instead. Amenities include seasonal composting toilets, non-potable water, and food storage lockers. No fires are allowed; only self-contained stoves are permitted. The terrain throughout the campground is uneven and rough, and facilities are not accessible. All visitors to Isle Royale National Park pay an entrance fee, and small parties of 6 or fewer require a free overnight permit. Groups of 7 or more must submit permit requests through the park's online system and pay $25 per permit. Pets are not allowed in the park, and quiet hours run from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. EDT.

Directions

Lake Richie Campground is located on the north shore of Lake Richie, off of the Indian Portage Trail. Access requires canoe/kayak portage from Intermediate Lake (0.6 miles), Moskey Basin (2.0 miles), Chippewa Harbor (1.2 miles), or Lake LeSage (0.6 miles). No private boat access. The park is accessible by ferry, seaplane, or private boat from the mainland.
