Moskey Basin Campground

Open

Isle Royale is currently open for backcountry camping. Visitor centers at Rock Harbor and Windigo remain closed, and potable water is unavailable at main hubs. Food storage lockers are in place at most campgrounds. Trail conditions include scattered snowbanks, ice patches, and downed trees, particularly near shorelines. Wolf activity is elevated island-wide. The 3-night stay limit at Moskey Basin applies June 1 through Labor Day.

About

Moskey Basin Campground occupies a scenic location at the west end of Rock Harbor Channel in Isle Royale National Park, offering backcountry camping with excellent sunrise views over the channel. The campground sits along the Indian Portage and Rock Harbor Trails, making it a popular stop for backpackers traversing the island. Paddlers can access the site directly from Rock Harbor Channel or via a 2-mile portage from Lake Richie. The campground provides 6 three-sided shelters and 8 individual tent sites, all available first-come, first-served. Two group sites accommodate parties of 7-10 and require advance reservation through the park. Facilities include seasonal composting toilets and food storage lockers to reduce wildlife conflicts. Water is available but non-potable and must be treated before drinking. There is no trash service; campers must pack out all waste. Access is limited to foot, canoe, kayak, or private boat. The dock accommodates overnight mooring with an 8-foot depth under normal conditions. A 3-night consecutive stay limit applies from June 1 through Labor Day. The terrain throughout is uneven with rocks and roots, and facilities are not ADA accessible.
