Shelters along the shoreline of Chippewa Harbor
Open

Isle Royale National Park is open April 16 through October 31 annually. Individual tent sites and shelters are first-come, first-served; no reservations required. Group sites (7+ people) require advance reservation with a $25 permit fee. A 3-night consecutive stay limit applies June 1 through Labor Day.

About

Chippewa Harbor Campground occupies a scenic position on Isle Royale's south shore, where the Indian Portage Trail meets Lake Superior. This backcountry destination requires significant effort to reach: hikers access it via the portage trail connecting from Lake Richie, while paddlers and private boaters can approach directly from the lake. The Voyageur II passenger ferry and Rock Harbor Lodge water taxi also serve the dock. The campground provides 7 sites total: 6 individual tent sites and 1 group site (reservable for parties of 7+). Four three-sided shelters offer protection from the elements. Facilities include seasonal composting toilets and food storage lockers to protect against wildlife. Water is available on-site but is non-potable and must be treated before drinking. Fires are permitted only in designated metal fire rings or standing grills; otherwise, campers must use self-contained stoves. All trash must be packed out. As with all Isle Royale campgrounds, pets are prohibited throughout the park. The terrain is uneven and rough, with facilities that are not accessible. The dock maintains approximately 7 feet of depth under normal conditions, and boats may stay overnight.
