Paddling to Lake Richie Canoe Campsite
Open

The park is open April 16 through October 31 annually. The campground operates first-come, first-served with free permits obtained upon arrival. A 2-night stay limit is in effect June 1 through Labor Day.

About

Lake Richie Canoe Campground occupies the north shore of Lake Richie within Isle Royale National Park's designated wilderness. This remote interior lake campground is accessible exclusively by canoe or kayak, requiring portages from connecting waterways: 0.6 miles from Intermediate Lake, 0.6 miles from Lake LeSage, 1.2 miles from Chippewa Harbor, or 2.0 miles from Moskey Basin. No private motorboats are permitted on interior lakes. The campground provides 3 individual tent sites allocated first-come, first-served. Amenities are minimal but include seasonal composting toilets and food storage lockers for bear-resistant storage. Water is available from the lake but is non-potable and must be treated before drinking. There are no fire rings; only self-contained camp stoves are permitted throughout Isle Royale's backcountry. All overnight visitors must obtain a free backcountry permit upon arrival at Rock Harbor, Windigo, or aboard the Ranger III ferry. A consecutive-night stay limit of 2 nights applies from June 1 through Labor Day. Campers should be prepared for Isle Royale's unpredictable weather and the physical demands of portaging gear through rugged terrain.
