About
Laguna Campground sits at 6,000 feet elevation in the Laguna Mountain Recreation Area of Cleveland National Forest, providing a cool mountain retreat just one hour east of San Diego. The large facility features five loops of campsites nestled among pines and oaks, with some areas offering meadow views. The campground is equipped with flush toilet restrooms, coin-operated showers, and campfire rings at each site. The area is renowned for its extensive trail system, including direct access to the 2,650-mile Pacific Crest Trail. Hikers can explore the Laguna Meadow Trail system, the Big Laguna Trail past Big Laguna Lake, and the nearby Sunset Trail. Wildflowers typically peak in April and May. Little Laguna Lake is a short distance away and provides excellent opportunities for photography and nature observation. Part of the campground is fenced to protect the habitat of the endangered Laguna Skipper butterfly. The area hosts a variety of bird species, and in wet years, Big Laguna Lake attracts ducks and waterfowl. The campground features an amphitheater for educational programs, and the San Diego State University Observatory sponsors Star Parties most Saturday evenings during summer. Nearby El Prado Campground houses the historic El Prado Cabin, the first ranger cabin built in Cleveland National Forest in 1911.
