About

Located in the McCain Valley Resource Conservation Area of southeastern San Diego County, Cottonwood Campground offers a tranquil escape among live oaks at elevations between 3,000 and 4,500 feet. The campground features 25 developed sites split between east and west loops on either side of McCain Valley Road, with the east loop accommodating equestrian camping with horse stables. The campground serves as an excellent base for day hikes and overnight backpacking trips. The Pepperwood Trail and Sombrero Peak Trail, both rated moderate to strenuous, wind through sandy terrain across public, state, and private lands, leading to the Sombrero Peak Area, Upper Bow Willow Canyon, and Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. The higher elevation provides relief from desert heat, with summer temperatures ranging from 60 to 95 degrees and winter temperatures in the 50s to below freezing, with occasional snowfall. Most precipitation occurs December through April, with thundershowers common in July and August.
