About
Kirk Creek Campground occupies a stunning bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean along Highway 1 in the Los Padres National Forest. At roughly 100 feet elevation, the campground provides panoramic views of the Big Sur coastline, with each spacious, grassy site oriented toward the ocean. Sunrises and sunsets here are exceptional, and migrating whales can be spotted offshore from November through February. The campground offers 33 single-family sites suitable for tents and RVs up to 30 feet. Each site includes a picnic table and fire ring with grill. Vault toilets are provided, but there is no potable water, so campers must bring their own supply. A short trail leads down to a rocky beach, while the Vicente Flats Trailhead across the highway provides access into the Ventana Wilderness for longer backcountry excursions. Wildlife in the area includes fox, bobcat, deer, and raccoon; mountain lions and bears are occasionally seen but have never entered the campground. Poison oak is abundant throughout the area. Sand Dollar Beach, the largest sandy beach in Big Sur and popular for surfing, fishing, and swimming, lies five miles to the south.
Directions
From San Luis Obispo, take Highway 1 north for approximately 60-80 miles. The campground is located about 35 miles south of Big Sur village. Highway 1 is currently closed from the Monterey/Big Sur area, so approach from the south.
